They had an in-depth discussion about the issues with Ph.D. study programs in Southeast Asia and the phenomenon of ‘buying degrees with money.’<\/span><\/p>\n

Last time we talked with Teacher Wang, we learned that there might be some shady aspects to Malaysian study abroad agencies, so he recommended both of you for this discussion. I’ve heard there have been many problems with Southeast Asian Ph.D. study programs. Could you elaborate on the situation?<\/p>\n

Miss Lam: Yes, that’s right. In the past two years, especially during the pandemic, many agencies have been using the internet to push a lot of information to those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. They’ve been telling them that they can easily get a Ph.D. in Southeast Asia, even just by paying money, without much effort, and can almost guarantee obtaining the degree.<\/p>\n

\u4e3b\u6301\u4eba:\u771f\u7684\u6709\u8fd9\u79cd\u82b1\u94b1\u5c31\u80fd\u4e70\u6765\u7684\u535a\u58eb\u5417?\u6211\u4e5f\u5f88\u597d\u5947\u3002\u5982\u679c\u6709\u7684\u8bdd\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u60f3\u5f04\u4e00\u4e2a\uff0c\u54c8\u54c8\u3002<\/p>\n

Host: Is there really such a thing as buying a Ph.D. with money? I’m quite curious too. If that’s possible, I’d like to get one myself, haha.<\/p>\n

Dr. Lee: The projects we have come across are all relatively formal, and the universities are legitimate. Generally, universities that care about their reputation won’t dare to be too reckless. However, there might<\/p>\n

\u00a0be some less reputable universities, especially in countries like Indonesia or the Philippines, where this could happen. Of course, many people see the intense educational competition in China and the strong demand for academic qualifications, so there are many agencies looking to make money from this.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u4e3b\u6301\u4eba\uff0c\u6211\u77e5\u9053\uff0c\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u4f1a\u6709\u4e00\u4e9b\u4eba\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u8bfb\u535a\u58eb\u662f\u60f3\u76f4\u63a5\u82b1\u94b1\uff0c\u7136\u540e\u4e5f\u53ef\u4ee5\u613f\u610f\u914d\u5408\u8d70\u6d41\u7a0b\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u5fc5\u987b\u8ba9\u4e2d\u4ecb\u4fdd\u8fc7\u7684\uff0c\u6709\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u4fdd\u8fc7\u535a\u58eb\u5417?<\/p>\n

Host: I know that in China, some people want to directly pay for their Ph.D. and are willing to go through the process, but they require the agency to guarantee their graduation. Is there such a thing as a guaranteed Ph.D.?<\/p>\n

Dr.Lee:\u90a3\u5927\u5bb6\u90fd\u8bfb\u8fc7\u672c\u79d1\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u6709\u6ca1\u6709\u4fdd\u8fc7\u7684\u672c\u79d1\u5440?\u4f60\u8981\u662f\u5929\u5929\u90fd\u4e0d\u53bb\u4e0a\u8bfe\uff0c\u6700\u540e\u8fd8\u8981\u7ed9\u4f60\u53d1\u4e00\u4e2a\u6bd5\u4e1a\u8bc1\uff0c\u4f60\u8ba9\u8001\u5e08\u548c\u5b66\u6821\u7684\u9762\u5b50\u5f80\u54ea\u91cc\u653e\u554a?\u535a\u58eb\u7684\u6bd4\u8f83\u7279\u6b8a\uff0c\u867d\u7136\u4e0d\u7528\u7ecf\u5e38\u4e0a\u8bfe\u4e86\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u4ed6\u8fd8\u662f\u8981\u8ddf\u5bfc\u5e08\u7ecf\u5e38\u8054\u7edc\uff0c\u505a\u7814\u7a76\uff0c\u8fd8\u662f\u8981\u6709\u76f8\u5bf9\u597d\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u6210\u679c\uff0c\u53d1\u8868\u671f\u520a\u51fa\u6765\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e2a\u51b3\u5b9a\u6743\u597d\u50cf\u4e0d\u5728\u4e2d\u4ecb\u5427?<\/p>\n

Dr. Lee: When everyone was doing their bachelor’s degree, was there a guaranteed bachelor’s degree? If you never attend classes, should the university still grant you a degree? Where would that leave the dignity of the teachers and the institution? Ph.D. studies are different; although you don’t need to attend classes often, you still need to maintain regular contact with your supervisor, conduct research, and produce relatively good research outcomes, with publications in journals. The decision-making power doesn’t seem to lie with the agencies, does it?<\/p>\n

Miss Lam:\u6ca1\u9519\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u4e2d\u4ecb\u63a8\u9001\u7684\u5f88\u591a\u5b66\u751f\u90fd\u662f\u80fd\u529b\u5f88\u5dee\u7684\u5b66\u751f\uff0c\u90a3\u4e48\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u5b66\u672f\u80fd\u529b\u4e0d\u5f3a\uff0c\u5b9e\u9645\u4e0a\u5bfc\u5e08\u4e5f\u5f88\u607c\u706b\u3002\u6709\u9053\u7406\u7ed9\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u5b66\u751f\u5728\u7b54\u8fa9\u7533\u8bf7\u4e0a\u7b7e\u5b57\u7684\u3002\u54ea\u6015\u5b66\u6821\u5f3a\u538b\u7ed9\u4ed6\uff0c\u90a3\u4ed6\u4e4b\u540e\u4e5f\u4e0d\u613f\u610f\u53bb\u6536\u4e2d\u56fd\u5b66\u751f\uff0c\u4ed6\u62d2\u7edd\u5b66\u6821\u4ee5\u540e\u7ed9\u4ed6\u7684\u5206\u914d\u7684\u4e2d\u56fd\u56fd\u9645\u751f\uff0c\u50cf\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u4e2d\u4ecb\u5982\u679c\u786c\u6765\u7684\u8bdd\uff0c\u4f1a\u51fa\u5f88\u5927\u7684\u95ee\u9898\u54af\u3002<\/p>\n

Miss Lam: Exactly. If the agencies push many students with poor abilities, and these students lack academic skills, it actually irritates the supervisors. There’s no reason for them to sign off on these students’ thesis defenses. Even if the university pressures them, they won’t want to accept Chinese students afterward. They might refuse future allocations of Chinese international students from the<\/p>\n

\u00a0university. If such agencies push too hard, it could lead to serious problems.<\/p>\n

\u4e3b\u6301\u4eba:\u6240\u4ee5\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u535a\u58eb\u5ff5\u7740\u4e66\u5c31\u9000\u5b66\u4e86\u4e48?<\/p>\n

Host: So, are there many Ph.D. students dropping out during their studies?<\/p>\n

Miss Lam:\u5f53\u7136\u535a\u58eb\u9000\u5b66\u8fd9\u79cd\u4e8b\u60c5\u5ff5\u4e0d\u5b8c\u5f88\u6b63\u5e38\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u4e2d\u4ecb\u662f\u4e0d\u7ba1\u4f60\u7684\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u8fd9\u91cc\u9762\u662f\u4e2a\u5751\u3002<\/p>\n

Miss Lam: Of course, it’s normal for Ph.D. students to drop out if they can’t complete their studies. But the agencies don’t care about that, so it’s a trap.<\/p>\n

Dr.Lee:\u4f1a\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u535a\u58eb\u5728\u8bfb\u4e66\u7684\u8fc7\u7a0b\u4e2d\u9000\u5b66\u5417? \u636e\u4f60\u4eec\u4e86\u89e3\u9a6c\u6765\u897f\u4e9a\u73b0\u5728\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u3002<\/p>\n

Dr. Lee: Are there many Ph.D. students in Malaysia who drop out during their studies? What’s the situation like, according to your understanding?<\/p>\n

\u4e3b\u6301\u4eba:\u6211\u4eec\u524d\u4e0d\u4e45\u542c\u8bf4\u7684\u90a3\u4e2a\u9879\u76ee\u4e0d\u5c31\u662f\u8fd9\u6837\u5417?\u4e2d\u56fd\u90a3\u4e2a\u4e2d\u4ecb\u5904\u7406\u5b8c\u4e86\u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u6211\u4f30\u8ba1\u6709\u4e00\u5927\u534a\u7684\u5b66\u751f\u90fd\u9000\u5b66\u4e86\u3002\u90a3\u4e2a\u4e2d\u4ecb\u7b80\u76f4\u662f\u5728\u80e1\u4f5c\u975e\u4e3a\u3002\u80fd\u4e0d\u80fd\u7b80\u5355\u8bf4\u4e00\u4e0b\u8fd9\u4e2a\u60c5\u51b5\u5462? \u4e5f\u5206\u4eab\u4e00\u4e0b\u3002<\/p>\n

Host: Isn’t that what we heard about that recent project? After the Chinese agency processed everything, I guess more than half of the students dropped out. That agency was just acting recklessly. Can you briefly explain the situation? Please share with us.<\/p>\n

Dr.Lee:\u6211\u53ef\u4ee5\u7b80\u5355\u5730\u89e3\u91ca\u4e00\u4e0b\u8fd9\u4e2a\u60c5\u51b5\u3002\u5927\u4f53\u4e0a\uff0c\u9a6c\u6765\u897f\u4e9a\u7684\u535a\u58eb\u6559\u80b2\u8fd9\u4e00\u5757\uff0c\u662f\u5728\u8fd9\u4e24\u5e74\u56e0\u4e3a\u75ab\u60c5\u548c\u7ebf\u4e0a\u8bfe\u7a0b\u7684\u63a8\u5e7f\u800c\u53d8\u5f97\u70ed\u95f9\u8d77\u6765\u7684\u3002\u5b66\u6821\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u65b9\u4fbf\u7684\u5728\u7ebf\u8bfe\u7a0b\uff0c\u5b66\u751f\u4e0d\u9700\u8981\u53bb\u56fd\u5916\u5c31\u53ef\u4ee5\u5b66\u4e60\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u62db\u751f\u5c31\u8ba9\u4e2d\u4ecb\u4eec\u5ba3\u4f20\u5f97\u5f88\u7b80\u5355\uff0c\u53ea\u9700\u5728\u5bb6\u8bfb\u7f51\u8bfe\u5c31\u53ef\u4ee5\u62ff\u5230\u535a\u58eb\u5b66\u4f4d\u4e86\u3002\u751a\u81f3\u8fde\u8bba\u6587\u90fd\u53ef\u4ee5\u627e\u4eba\u4ee3\u5199\uff0c\u53ea\u9700\u8981\u82b1\u94b1\u4e70\uff0c\u7136\u540e\u628a\u6d41\u7a0b\u8dd1\u5b8c\u5c31\u6bd5\u4e1a\u7b54\u8fa9\u4e86\uff0c\u7b54\u8fa9\u5b8c\u4e8b\u513f\u5c31\u62ff\u8bc1\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\n

Dr. Lee: I can briefly explain the situation. In general, the Ph.D. education sector in Malaysia became popular in the past two years, partly due to the pandemic and the promotion of online courses. Universities offered convenient online courses, allowing students to study without going abroad. So, recruitment was made simple by the agencies, saying you just need to take online classes at home to get a Ph.D. degree. Even the thesis can be ghostwritten; you just need to pay, go through the process, and then you’re ready for your viva. After the viva, you get your degree.<\/p>\n

\u4e3b\u6301\u4eba:\u542c\u4e0a\u53bb\u8fd9\u6837\u4e5f\u8fd8\u4e0d\u9519\u554a\uff0c\u6ca1\u4eba\u8bf4\u51fa\u6765\uff0c\u4e0d\u662f\u5f88\u597d\u561b? \u54c8\u54c8\u3002<\/p>\n

Host: That sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? No one’s speaking out against it, so it’s all good, right? Haha.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Lee: It’s not that easy to hide. The pandemic is unpredictable, and so are the details. First, the pandemic is over now; you can’t stay at home forever. You still need to go to the university, complete the necessary registration and visa procedures. You’re a full-time international student with an official offer, not an auditor. Regardless of which agency sent you, and how much they brag, once you get to a Malaysian university, the process management is the same. You have to choose courses, and the course tutors aren’t assigned by the agency. The grades decided by these tutors can’t be given by the agency.<\/p>\n

\u4e3b\u6301\u4eba:\u4e4b\u524d\u90a3\u4e2a\u5927\u5b66\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u8fd8\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u5408\u4f5c\u9662\u6821\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u5f04\u8fc7\u4e00\u4e2a\u6559\u5b66\u4e2d\u5fc3\uff0c\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u4e5f\u51fa\u4e86\u5f88\u5927\u7684\u72b6\u51b5\u5462?<\/p>\n

Host: The university we talked about earlier had a partnership with a Chinese institution and set up a teaching center. Why did that turn into a big problem?<\/p>\n

Dr. Lee: That situation was even more outrageous. Every well-known national university in Malaysia has its own recruitment company. This company collaborates with Chinese institutions and has recruited many Chinese teachers to pursue Ph.D.s there. The craziest part was they were issuing offers directly through private training companies. But the students couldn’t understand because the offer had the university’s logo on it. They paid the fees to this Chinese organization, thinking it was all going to the university, that they were official university students. They even attended online classes. With China opening its borders this year, students insisted on going abroad to see the truth for themselves. The Chinese center organized an intensive course in Malaysia to appease the students and demonstrate their influence at the school, hoping to regain the students’ trust. But this backfired. Many students’ eVALs hadn’t been approved yet, but they were eager to find the truth at the university. With the course schedule nearly set and many students needing to adjust to the international timing, they decided to use business visas for the students to attend classes in Malaysia. After all, the business invitations were issued by the university’s training company, making it seem more reliable than a tourist visa.<\/p>\n

If they aim for academic positions without significant academic output, finding a job upon returning to China can be challenging. Realistically, getting a Ph.D. from a Southeast Asian university, even from a university like Universiti Malaya, and then working in China can be problematic.<\/p>\n

Pursuing a Ph.D. in China involves intense competition and waiting lists. Studying in Europe and America is expensive. Southeast Asia offers an easier and more affordable option, though recent controversies have led to a perception of such degrees as less valuable. But if one needs the degree sooner or later, it’s better to get it sooner for peace of mind and career advancement.<\/p>\n

Nobody wants to be in the news for such reasons, leading to a slowdown in recruiting these Ph.D. holders. However, the quality of Ph.D. programs varies worldwide. If there are substandard programs, Europe and America have them too. Southeast Asia, due to its cost-effectiveness, is currently under scrutiny. In many places, because fewer people go there, and the numbers are lower, it hasn’t attracted as much attention for such issues.<\/p>\n

Agencies that promise guaranteed graduation or certification, or claim you can graduate in two years, are really misleading.<\/p>\n
